Being Practical
Trying to think what to put down which seems like a monthly thing now with this Blog.. I guess if most of this year has been more about social, developing networks etc... This month then has been very much about implementing very practical skills. In most instance, this has been on the web development side. Throughout the year several projects have been around developing web as part of it, so in a way it's been nice to spend a month doing straight web development for a change. I've become more skilled in both Wordpress and Drupal dev, and while this has mostly been simply for work, it's definitely something that will also filter through to other projects.
In another sense, being practical is also about how I'm going to develop a practice going forward. Since I did not get employed straight out, and haven't felt the need to get into teaching, there is still a sense of how to but the more conceptual side to work and what value that generates. Thats something that I'm determined will happen i the new year, but it's been the work and projects I've been involved with other the last year that seems to be teaching me the most on how to push that forward.
Trying to work out the best method for putting it into practice is still an ongoing experiment. With the development I have done over the past year, trying to get a Job from this is one possibility, as is continued efforts to push development through freelance. I'm still not sure if it's right to position what I'm doing as a stepping stone to something else. It's also bring up the old debate of whether I should look into getting into research again... Its not something I'm too sure about. Balancing the practical skills with the more conceptual side and selling that is still something I'm working out, I'm not sure there is a permanent answer.
however through this last year, it's been very much about trying things, being part of various peoples projects, and having a record of stuff that I was part of, even if not all of that launched in the end, that has been important to me.
